This engaging bronze statue from the 1920s by Josef Lorenzl (1892-1950) depicts a beautiful warrior woman posed for battle while holding a scimitar. The figure is artfully captured with one leg in the air and mounted on a highly figured, cylindrical marble base.
A master designer, Lorenzl’s bronze statues epitomize the Art Deco era. Like Preiss, Chiparus and Kelety, the other great sculptors from this period, the Austrian Lorenzl was inspired by the female form and the new found freedom that women enjoyed in the 1920s and 30s. The sculpture is signed by Lorenzl and numbered 39 of 103.
